The FDA has just approved an expanded range of high-power cylinder correction intraocular lens implants for those patients that have a cataract and astigmatism.
“Age-Related Macular Degenerative, AMD, is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans age 60 and older. It is a disease that causes cells in the macula- the part of the eye that allows us to see in fine detail – to die.
“For patients diagnosed with glaucoma, taking medications for the condition appears to improve survival, researchers found” according to Medpage Today.

“Action packed video games like Halo and Call of Duty can enhance visual attention, the ability that allows us to focus on relevant visual information,” reports Science Daily. Dr. Daphne Bavelier et al from the U of Rochester reported their findings in this month’s WIREs Cognitive Science.
When patients with astigmatism undergoing cataract surgery received a TORIC INTRAOCULAR LENS implant they enjoyed very good distance vision after surgery without the need for glasses.
“Individuals who have higher blood glucose levels and poorer control of those levels over time (as measured by their HbA1c levels which is a measure of the blood glucose levels over time) appear more likely to develop eye-related complications (diabetic retinopathy) 10 years later” according to Science Daily.
Acupuncture was more effective in treating anisometropic amblyopia also known as “lazy eye” in children when compared to the standard treatment of wearing an eye patch according to a study reported by Dr. Dennis Lam in the Archives of Ophthalmology.
Presbyopia starts after the age of forty. The lens in our eye begins to thicken and we lose the ability to see well at near: for example blurry vision when reading a book or a text message. Current treatments include bifocals or reading glasses, LASIK vision correction in one eye for near - mono-vision LASIK, and the replacement of the natural lens with a high technology lens such as the ReStor lens. However, more advanced treatments are coming our way as reported in Science Daily.
The visual portrayal of depression in the world of art has been through darkness;shades of grays and no bright colors. “Scientific findings now lend empirical support to this representation of depression that everything looks gray when you feel blue” reports Medical News Today.
A new technology called ultra short pulse laser or femtosecond laser will advance
cataract surgery to a new level – the first major advance since phacoemulsification
was developed 40 years ago.

Patients with moderate and advanced macular degeneration benefi ted from cataract surgery. This was reported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Glaucoma, a disease of the eye caused by death of the nerve fibers, and is associated with increased pressure in the eye. The treatment for this disorder is primarily aimed at lowering that pressure.
